Fort Balfour Site

April 13, 1781

The surrender of Fort Balfour on April 13, 1781, was a masterstroke of partisan deception and a significant blow to British control over the regional supply lines between Charleston and Savannah. Located near the strategic village of Pocotaligo (close to modern-day Yemassee), the fort was a key stronghold for the British-aligned Royal Militia.

The Siege and the Ruse

In April 1781, Colonel William Harden, operating under the broad strategic direction of Francis Marion, arrived at Pocotaligo with a force of roughly 70 to 100 mounted partisans. They found Fort Balfour—a redoubt constructed around the Van Bibber house—defended by nearly 100 Loyalist militiamen under Lieutenant Colonel William Kelsall and Captain Nicholas Lechmere.

Harden, knowing he lacked the numbers and artillery for a direct assault, employed a psychological ruse. He sent a formal summons to Kelsall, warning that he was prepared to storm the fort and would offer no quarter if forced to do so. To sell the deception, Harden kept his men moving through the woods and high grass, creating the illusion of a much larger force.

Surrender and Mutiny

The pressure on the Loyalist commanders was compounded from within. Many of the militiamen inside the fort were local men whose commitment to the Crown was wavering as the tide of the war shifted. Facing a perceived overwhelming force and internal mutiny, Kelsall surrendered the fort without a shot being fired.

Harden captured 91 prisoners, including high-ranking officials like Kelsall and Lechmere, and seized a significant cache of arms and salt—a precious commodity in the wartime Lowcountry.

The Withdrawal

The Patriot occupation of the site was brief. Aware that a large British relief column was already en route from Charleston, Harden paroled the prisoners, destroyed the fort’s defenses, and withdrew his “flying army” back into the swamps before the British regulars could arrive. The victory at Fort Balfour effectively ended British administrative control over the upper Beaufort District.
